From 1994 to 1997 he was Junior Resident (PG) in the Department of Internal Medicine at PGIMER Chandigarh, followed by Senior Resident in the Department of Hepatology from 1997 to 2000. He then moved to CMC Vellore for the DM programme and served there as Senior Registrar in the Department of Gastroenterology from 2001 to 2004, and as Consultant for a year after that. He joined Metro Hospital, Faridabad, in 2013 and has been practising there since then.
Dr. Virender Chauhan was part of the group responsible for problem-based learning for undergraduate medical students in the institution in the field of Gastrointestinal Physiology. This involved development of case material and overseeing schedules. He was instrumental in devising some academic innovations in the teaching programme in Gastroenterology. These included Debates on contentious issues with definite controversies in understanding and management, wherein two postgraduates took up opposing viewpoints; Protocol Meetings wherein all doctors in a unit thrashed out uniform protocols for management and evaluation of all patients; and a Gut Club that conducted a weekly Gastro-Surgery-Radiology academic session.
Dr. Chauhan is very enthusiastic about teaching, and his philosophy is to teach as many people as possible, as much as possible and as often as possible – a credo that he followed from his undergraduate days. He was the most sought after person to explain concepts to his classmates, especially when exams loomed large on the horizon. He continued this as a resident and was called to take frequent classes for the interns, sometimes substituting for Professors who were unable to take bedside clinics or lectures. Says Dr. Chauhan, "I believe that learning is always a self-directed process. Teachers are only facilitators who encourage thinking in a particular direction. Teachers should encourage independent thinking and questioning of existing dogma. In short, evidence based medicine and not eminence based medicine!"
